7 Tank Phosphating Process

Surface treatment process — steps and purpose
Step No. Process Name Purpose / Function
1️⃣ Degreasing Removes oil, grease, and dust from the metal surface using an alkaline cleaner. Ensures a clean base for treatment.
2️⃣ Water Rinse Washes away any remaining alkaline residues to prevent contamination in the next step.
3️⃣ Derusting Removes rust, mill scale, and oxide layers using an acidic solution. Cleans the metal surface.
4️⃣ Water Rinse Eliminates acid residues and rust particles before the next treatment.
5️⃣ Activation Prepares the metal surface for uniform phosphating by creating fine nucleation sites. Improves phosphate crystal formation.
6️⃣ Phosphating Deposits a phosphate coating (iron or zinc phosphate) that enhances corrosion resistance and coating adhesion.
7️⃣ Water Rinse Removes excess phosphate sludge or residues to ensure a smooth, clean surface.
8️⃣ Passivation Final treatment using chromic or non-chrome sealant. Improves corrosion resistance and surface stability before coating.
